Chapter 1
About Me
Hi, I'm a dedicated early childhood education student with a deep passion for nurturing young minds during their most formative years. I believe that the foundation laid in the early years of a child's life shapes who they become β€” and I'm committed to making that foundation strong, joyful, and inclusive.
I am currently completing my diploma in Early Childhood Education, where I have had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in diverse classroom settings. My background includes work with children ages 2–6 years, supporting their cognitive, social-emotional, and physical development through intentional play-based learning.

Chapter 3
My Philosophy Statement
"Every child is born curious. My role as an educator is to protect that curiosity, nurture it, and give it room to grow."
My philosophy of early childhood education is rooted in the belief that children are capable, competent, and naturally motivated to learn. Inspired by theorists such as Vygotsky, Piaget, and Bronfenbrenner, I see my role not as a transmitter of knowledge, but as a guide, co-learner, and environment builder who scaffolds meaningful experiences.
I am committed to creating inclusive, responsive environments where all children β€” regardless of ability, culture, or background β€” feel seen, valued, and empowered. I believe in the power of play-based, emergent curriculum that honors children's interests and allows learning to unfold organically through exploration, relationship, and reflection.
🌱 Child-Led Learning
Following the child's lead to build intrinsic motivation and a love of discovery.
🀝 Relationships First
Secure, trusting relationships between educator and child are the foundation of all learning.
🌈 Inclusion & Equity
Every child deserves an environment that reflects and celebrates who they are.
πŸ“ Reflective Practice
Continuous self-reflection and professional growth are essential to quality care and education.

Example Activity Plans
The following activity plans were developed during my academic placements and course work. Each plan reflects intentional, developmentally appropriate practice aligned with How Does Learning Happen? Ontario's pedagogy for the early years.
Sensory Watercolor Exploration
Age Group: 3–4 years Domain: Creative Arts & Fine Motor Goal: To support self-expression and fine motor development through open-ended art exploration using watercolors, salt, and textured paper.
Nature Sensory Bin
Age Group: 2–3 years Domain: Sensory & Cognitive Goal: To encourage curiosity and language development by exploring natural materials including leaves, stones, bark, and soil in a guided sensory bin experience.
Storytime & Puppet Theatre
Age Group: 4–5 years Domain: Language & Literacy Goal: To build emergent literacy skills, oral language, and comprehension through interactive storytelling and a follow-up puppet retelling activity.
Academic Project
Academic Spotlight: Curriculum Design Project
Project Overview
This curriculum design project was completed as part of my Programming and Curriculum Planning course. The goal was to design a two-week emergent curriculum unit inspired by children's observed interest in insects and the natural world.
The unit incorporated learning across all developmental domains β€” cognitive, social-emotional, physical, and creative β€” and was grounded in the principles of How Does Learning Happen? and the Ontario Early Learning Framework. Planning documentation included webbing, daily activity plans, environmental set-up guides, and reflection journals.
Key Outcomes
  • Developed 10 detailed, cross-curricular activity plans
  • Created a responsive learning environment layout
  • Produced a reflective practitioner journal with weekly entries
  • Presented findings to a panel of faculty reviewers
Chapter 5
Behaviour Management
Effective behaviour guidance in early childhood is rooted in empathy, consistency, and understanding the why behind a child's behaviour. Rather than a reactive, punitive approach, I embrace a proactive, relationship-based framework that supports children in developing self-regulation and social skills over time.
This cycle reflects my commitment to treating behaviour as communication β€” an invitation to understand what a child needs, not a problem to be eliminated. Consistent routines, clear and kind language, and a warm educator-child relationship are the most powerful tools in my behaviour guidance toolkit.
Core Strategies I Use
Positive Reinforcement
Acknowledging and celebrating pro-social behaviours to encourage repetition and build confidence.
Visual Schedules & Transitions
Using picture-based daily schedules to reduce anxiety and support smooth transitions throughout the day.
Co-Regulation Support
Staying calm, present, and emotionally regulated myself so children can borrow my calm during difficult moments.
Extra-Curricular Project
Extra-Curricular Spotlight: Community Storytime Program
About the Project
As a volunteer initiative outside of my coursework, I co-designed and facilitated a weekly Community Storytime Program at a local public library. The program ran for eight weeks and served children ages 2–5 alongside their caregivers, with an average attendance of 20 families per session.
Each session was thoughtfully planned to include a themed read-aloud, a music and movement activity, and a simple craft or sensory exploration tied to the book's themes. The program was bilingual β€” incorporating both English and French β€” to reflect the diversity of our community.
What I Contributed
Program Design
Curated books, planned thematic activities, and created bilingual song sheets for each session.
Facilitation
Led read-alouds, guided movement activities, and supported caregiver engagement throughout.
Evaluation
Collected caregiver feedback and used it to refine and improve each subsequent session.
Growth & Reflection
Professional Growth & Reflections
Reflective practice is at the heart of what I do. Throughout my academic and placement experiences, I have developed the habit of pausing to ask: What did I observe? What does this mean for the child? What would I do differently? These questions guide my ongoing growth as an educator.
1
Year 1
Discovered my passion for play-based learning. Completed first field placement with toddlers. Began building my observation and documentation skills.
2
Year 2
Deepened my understanding of inclusive practice and behaviour guidance. Launched the Community Storytime volunteer initiative. Earned First Aid & CPR certification.
3
Ongoing
Completing final placement, refining curriculum planning skills, and building this professional portfolio to reflect my readiness for employment in the field.
4
Future Goals
Become a Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE), pursue leadership roles in programming, and continue advocating for high-quality, equitable early learning environments.

A Note on Reflective Practice: "The most powerful learning happens when we step back, look carefully at what we see, and let children's voices guide what comes next." This portfolio itself is a product of that reflective process β€” a curated, living document that will grow alongside my practice.
